Basic Basketball Drills




A wonderful thing about basketball is that it's not a complicated sport to understand at a basic level. You can get the basics in a couple minutes. There will always be more to learn when you want be good at playing basketball, and the tips that follow will be helpful place to get you started.

Learn how to hit a free throw shot. It looks simple to do, but it isn't that easy. Use good technique when shooting foul shots. To start off, hold the ball in front of you. Picture yourself going through the shot in your mind, with the ball sinking through the net. Then shoot! Shoot the ball in the trajectory you imagined.

Start out with proper balance before attempting to take a shot. You have seen some crazy shots made by professionals, but these shots aren't going to be based on fundamentals. They are merely making up the play on the spot. If you have correct balance when you are making a shot, you will make more consistent baskets over time.

You should often work on your layups. Layups sometimes wind up being 4 out of every 5 shots in basketball. When you practice, you need to be able to run toward the basket at full speed, then shoot while jumping in the air. This running and jumping technique will help you learn how to jump and shoot better during the game.

Learn how a bounce pass is thrown. Bouncing the pass to the receiver should be at their waist. It's smart to get the ball to bounce about 75% to the receiving player. It does depend on a variety of other factors, however.

Ask your fellow teammates if they have an opinion of your skills in the game. They will probably notice the things you do best. It could be your speed, or it could be your back-up abilities. Improve the skills where you tend to be a bit weaker while maintaining your stronger skills.

To land your layups, jump off the foot opposite the hand you shoot with. This means that if you shoot with your right hand, take off from your left foot. Your body will develop good coordination and you keep your defender at a distance.

Practicing with your weak hand will help to make you a better dribbler. If you can dribble equally well with each hand, it is simpler to get past your opponents. Bind your dominant hand so you will be forced to make use of your weaker side. Your weak hand won't be that for long!
